Pool Fence Compliance in Bundaberg

What the Queensland standard actually requires, and the handful of cheap fixes that separate a pass from a fail.

The essentials of the standard

  • Barrier height: at least 1200 mm from finished ground level, all the way around. Watch for garden beds built up against the outside of the fence
  • Gaps: no more than 100 mm under the fence or between vertical bars
  • Non-climbable zone: a 900 mm arc on the outside of the barrier with nothing climbable in it. Trees, pot plants, furniture, BBQs, pool pumps and retaining walls all count
  • Gates: open outwards away from the pool, self-close and self-latch from any open position, latch release at least 1500 mm above ground
  • Buildings as barriers: where a wall of the house forms part of the barrier, door and window rules apply. Doors generally can't open directly into the pool area, and windows need restricted openings or screens
  • Signage: a compliant CPR sign in good condition, visible from the pool area

The usual Bundaberg fails

After enough inspections in one region the pattern is clear. Around Bundaberg and the coast it's gate springs that lost tension over a hot summer, pot plants and outdoor furniture that migrated into the non-climbable zone, CPR signs cooked illegible by the Queensland sun, built-up mulch and garden beds quietly reducing fence height from the outside, and climbable pool equipment installed hard against the barrier. Every one of those is a same-day fix. Every one is also a legitimate fail on inspection day.

Pre-check: the smart order of operations

If you suspect your barrier has drifted out of compliance, or it's never been inspected, a pre-check walkthrough before the formal inspection means the fixable items get fixed first. You pay for one inspection and a pass, instead of a fail, a hardware-store weekend and a re-inspection. For sellers on a settlement clock and landlords between tenants, that's the difference between sorted this week and holding up the contract.

Planning new fencing or a pool renovation? Get the compliance advice before the fencing quote. A barrier designed to the standard costs the same as one that isn't, and the certificate becomes a formality.

Not sure your fence passes?

A ten-minute phone conversation usually tells you. A pre-check settles it.
